VR CARGO NORTHERN FINLAND

Transport by rail is safe, economic and friendly to the environment - an alternative for a lasting development. VR Cargo offers a nation-wide and international transport network both to the East and to the West. VR Cargo is the main transporter of the forest, metal and chemicals industries in Finland. Four Cargo Stations manage the Northern Finland traffic, with centres in Oulu, Kemi, Kontiomäki and Kokkola

VR Cargo is

in the position to offer transport services for all kinds of goods. The railway line from the Ports on the Northern Bothnia Bay to Vartius has recently been upgraded and it is in a good condition. The line has free capacity and the traffic on the line can accept a significant increase at short notice. The traditional co-operation with the railway companies east to the border ensures reliable transports to markets beyond the eastern border.

The international railway traffic needs efficient tools, with which the international logistic chain can be monitored. RailTrace is a monitoring system for consignments and wagons. Its geographic coverage encompasses almost all the European countries, as well as Russia.

The users of the RailTrace System are export and import companies, railway operators and other logistics companies that transport their goods to Finland, from Finland, or through Finland

The railway lines in Northern Finland are in the process of being electrified. The electric railway line from Oulu to Rovaniemi will start operating in 2004, after which the electrification works for the Oulu - Vartius line begin. As a direct result of the electrification of the railway lines transports will become faster and more environmentally friendly.
