THE LIETMAJÄRVI-KOTSKOMA LINE
THE KOTSKOMA-LIETMAJÄRVI Line has been built in several
phases beginning in Soviet Union times. The new line shortens the railway distance
to Northwest Russia by over five hundred (500) kilometres and speeds up shipping.
With the new transportation line, it possible to haul freight cost-effectively
to Central Europe and other commercial ports of the world (and vice versa, naturally)
via the Northlink PORTS located in the northern Gulf of Bothnia.
The new transport line opens excellent opportunities for the cost-efficient transport
of sawn timber, containers, bulk cargo and project consignments.
The Northlink PORTS and VR Cargo have developed their services and made significant
investments in the new transport line. Quays and shipping lanes have been renovated;
crane capacity and other infrastructure have been improved. Sections have been
electrified. These steps have made the new transport line into a cost-efficient,
safe and uncongested alternative for transport between Northwest Russia and Europe.
From the PORTS in the northern Gulf of Bothnia, there is regular, year-round
scheduled traffic to 30 ports in Europe and the Mediterranean Sea, 20 hectares
of covered storage space; maximum draft (depth) is 13.0 metres.
Russia has restrictedly opened a railway line junction for commercial traffic.
