The Port of Oulu offers many extra services, which adds to the flexibility of the transports. For the ships' crews there are new, modern facilities at the Seamen's Church. The PORTS of Oritkari, Nuottasaari and Vihreäsaari are all fenced in with access gates.

In Oritkari harbour there is a container depot, operated by Herman Andersson Oy, as well as a repacking unit for paper reels and pallets.

The icebreaker TUURA, owned by the Port, keeps the vast water areas of the port ice-free during the winter. TUURA is also used for towage and assistance, whenever necessary.

There are four separate PORTS in the Port of Oulu. This makes it possible to increase the efficient handling of each commodity group. This has been especially evident in the strong growth of the container traffic during the last years.

In the harbour of Toppila grain and cement are handled. In the harbour of Vihreäsaari the main commodities are liquid fuels and dry bulk. The Nuottasaari harbour handles mainly pigmentation products, such as china clay, carbonate and various chemicals, used by the forest industry. Oritkari harbour is mainly used as an export harbour. The main export commodities are paper, pulp and general cargo. The container traffic is concentrated to Oritkari harbour.

The long-term object of the Port of Oulu, through continuous development activities and investments, has been to create a level of services, which answers to the needs of the users of the port. During the last years, special efforts have been made in the development of quality and environment systems.

Adjacent to the Oitkari harbour a terminal for combined traffics is being built. The object of the project is to develop the road, rail and sea traffics into an integrated system of co-operation where synergy benefits can be exploited.
